Announcing the California Drought Relief Fund

Announcing the California Drought Relief Fund

Today we are exited to launch an effort to help people affected by a slow-moving climate disaster: the California drought. Called the California Drought Relief Fund, the campaign will help local organizations doing emergency drought and wildfire relief and recovery.

California is experiencing its worst drought in the last 1,200 years, and more than 95% of the state is experiencing extreme to exceptional drought. Now we are well into the fourth year of the drought, and thousands of Californians have literally run out of water in the Central Valley. Firefighters across the state are deep into an extremely destructive wildfire season.

The California Drought Relief Fund will help fund organizations delivering emergency bottled water, providing temporary household water storage tanks and filling services, as well as longer term projects like connecting houses to municipal water supplies and helping with low-interest loans for wells and other solutions. We’re also supporting firefighters and the people they help who are impacted by drought-fueled wildfires.

We begin 2015 with a look back to 2014, and the Climate Relief Fund’s campaigns to help people in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Hagupit and Typhoon Haiyan a year earlier. We are grateful to everyone who gave to support relief efforts there.

100% of donations to the Climate Relief Fund went to our partners in the Philippines, the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC). CDRC is a Philippine non-governmental organization, a nationwide network of local groups (mostly volunteers) helping people help themselves.

Typhoon Hagupit Update #2

Flash floods and landslides are still a major concern as Hagupit leaves the Philippines. 27 people have already been reported killed, most of them drowned in floodwaters. The government evacuated more than 1 million people prior to Hagupit’s arrival, which averted greater loss of life. Many people are returning to their villages to find their homes destroyed.

  • "The best thing I can express to all Californians that have the opportunity to listen is to feel first. To feel how we are living without water. To respect and appreciate the gift of water. It's a gift," says Raphael Surmay. The Surmay family has gone without running water for over a year. They live in East Porterville, a California town that was hit the hardest by the #cadrought. Help give running water to families like the Surmay's by donating to the California Drought Relief Fund here: www.droughtrelief.org
